A Taste of Thai Sweet Chili Sauce and hot Italian sausage make for a sweet – hot bite when wrapped in a square of puff pastry! This is the perfect appetizer for a crowd because it is so easy to prepare ahead of time.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 lb hot Italian sausage (bulk, not in links)
- 1/2 cup minced shallots
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
- 2 tablespoons minced cilantro
- 1-8 oz package cream cheese, room temperature
- 1/4 cup Sweet Chili Sauce, plus more for dipping
- 1-17.3 oz box Puff Pastry
- 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water
- Optional: 3 tablespoons sesame seeds
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400°F and cover large baking sheet with parchment.
- Add olive oil, sausage and shallots to a medium skillet. Cook on medium-high, stirring frequently to break up the sausage. Cook until sausage is starting to brown and no longer pink. Add crushed red pepper and mix into sausage mixture last 2 minutes of cooking. Drain and set aside to cool. When cool mix in cilantro.
- Add cream cheese to mixing bowl and beat until smooth. Add Sweet Chili Sauce to cream cheese and mix to incorporate.
- On a lightly floured work surface, roll out 1 sheet puff pastry to 15 x 12 inches. Cut into 5 (3 inch) rows by 4 (3 inch) rows, which equals 20-3 inch squares. Refrigerate remaining puff pastry sheet until ready to use.
- Dab corners of a square with the beaten egg. Add one teaspoon cream cheese in center of the square, top with one teaspoon sausage. Bring 4 corners to middle, pinch together and twist to seal. Place on baking sheet. Repeat with remaining 19 squares*. Can be refrigerated at this step and cooked according to step 6, when needed.
- Brush bundles with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired. Bake for 18-21 minutes or until golden. Repeat with remaining sheet of puff pastry. Serve with a small dish of Sweet Chili Sauce for dipping, if desired.
